“There simply are no words.”

That was how Indian Hill High School (IHHS) Teacher and Mock Trial Coach Steve Reger summarized his reaction to seeing his students at the Empire Atlanta International Invitational Tournament for mock trial. Monday, Sept. 24, at the end of four days of competition, the announcement was delivered that rendered Mr. Reger speechless: Indian Hill High School students won the world championship – and became the first team to go undefeated in the tournament’s history. The students traveled to Georgia to compete; Reger monitored their progress through social media.

“When I saw the video of the announcement of their win on Instagram, I actually teared up,” said Reger.

“This was a perfect example of how hard work leads to success,” said IHHS Senior Albert Kwon, who was part of the world champion team.

“This shows the power of a ‘total team effort.’ Absolutely everyone stepped up and performed brilliantly, and we would not have won had that not been the case,” added team member and IHHS Senior Sarah Kaplan.

The winning team included: Sarah Kaplan, Albert Kwon, Cooper Pierce, Sumner Colohan, Radu Dragomirescu, Kanksha Buch, Michael Ragnone, Ethan Marx, and Sydney Poffenberger. Sarah Kaplan was ranked the seventh highest-scoring attorney in the tournament, and Sydney Poffenberger was ranked the seventh highest-scoring witness.

“This is a winning team inside the mock courtroom, and outside that competitive arena,” said IHHS Principal Jeff Damadeo. “To say we are incredibly proud of these student-leaders is an understatement. There really are no words to express the emotion surrounding this victory.”
