Mercy Health, which provides advanced, quality, compassionate care in your neighborhood through its care network, announces that Indian Hill High School Junior Brett Fowler has completed a week-long orthopaedic internship.

Fowler worked alongside orthopaedic surgeon Robert Rhoad, MD of Wellington Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine, a Mercy Health partner, who was impressed with the young man’s skills.

“Brett demonstrated early on that he is extremely bright and is a quick learner. He prepared well for his days in clinic and had taken initiative to participate in extra study on hand, wrist and elbow surgery,” said Dr. Rhoad. “By the end of his week he demonstrated his aptitude by independently making the correct diagnosis on a patient who was suffering from a disabling wrist condition.”

“I absolutely loved my time during this internship and really thought what I learned was of great value, not only for the medical profession but also for strategies for college regarding science classes, Advanced Placement courses, etc.” said Brett. “The experience was worth a million dollars!”

Brett won the opportunity to serve alongside Dr. Rhoad in a formal internship as part of a school fundraising auction. The annual auction supports the Indian Hill Parent Teacher Organization while also affording students unique opportunities, such as the Orthopaedic Internship.

“We created the Orthopaedic Internship so that a student can learn firsthand what it’s like to serve as an orthopaedic surgeon. The student gains a familiarity with the requisite training process and for one week, steps from high school all the way to practicing medicine,” said Dr. Rhoad. “Students considering a career in medicine experience a week in the life a medical provider, which can help them decide if this is the path they want to follow.”
